Apple Whines to European Authorities of Motorola Having Double Standards

If you haven’t heard, Apple and Motorola have been in arms recently at the German courts.The latest rulings have been in favour of Motorola (hoorah!), with the result being quite a hefty royalty payment. Apple has been requested to pay 2.25% of all revenue from all 3G devices in exchange for patent licensing. While 2.25% may seem like a small number, it ends up accounting for huge sums of money based on Apple’s sales figures – and they’re not happy.

As a result of the harsh penalty, Apple has run to the European authorities claiming that Motorola has been ‘unfair’ in their dealings with the Cupertino company. Apple are claiming that Motorola is going against patent ‘FRAND’ (Fair, Reasonable

The death of ‘free’ Android licensing?

Google has sold…. I mean, ‘given away’ the Android platform to manufacturers for the best price possible: nothing. This attracted OEMs from around the world to have a ping at producing hardware for Google’s stunning software. The only price Google put forward was to include the Android Market on every device. Sales revenue from Apps were to be distributed between the developer (30%) and Google (70%).

Manufacturers were free from extra costs for using Android on their devices, until now. Microsoft’s lawyers have managed to successfully sue several manufacturers who use the Android platform. This blogger is not a happy blogger!
