How To: Use Google Maps Offline
Travelling is a traumatic experience for your phone. Suddenly everything’s changed! You generally won’t have any mobile Internet connection (gasp!) and often won’t have any phone connection at all (double gasp!). Even if you do have these things, you will want to use them as little as possible, as roaming fees are usually expensive. Despite this you’ll generally be relying on your phone more than usual, because frankly you’ll have no idea where you are and so will cling to your phone like the blankie you had when you were 3. Not only this, but your ability to get to a power point to charge your phone is likely to be sporadic (especially if you take to staying in hostels …
Updated (mapping area): Google Maps now includes public transport for Sydney
Update: A reader of ours, Bob Burgess, has done some research and discovered the area that Google Transit Maps covers in Sydney. It covers quite a large area (approximately 150km radius) and includes trains, buses and the ferry. Read the full excerpt from Google+ here.
Oh I just felt I should mention that it now also works in Newcastle, trains busses and the ferry. This probably means it’s been done for the entire city rail network and it’ll work in any NSW cities that run on the same system i.e. you can use the city rail website. I don’t know how far it extends but that probably means good news for Wollongong too
Ok, I did a bit of

Google Maps for Android to soon add offline capabilities
Google has announced that Google Maps for Android will soon be available offline. Yes, this feature has been available as a beta in labs for a short while now, but Google will finally be bringing it to all users. When is another question entirely though.
The lab version of offline Maps allows you to download a 10 square mile area for offline viewing. We hope the full version will extend that area and enable users to view entire cities. There’s no word on whether Street View, Navigations and the other goodies that come with Maps will be available – but as always, we’ll keep you updated when we hear more!

Google Maps for Android to have better 3D images, new UI
Google has today announced its Google Maps plans for the future for Android and iOS. First up, Google has stated that they will be drastically improving the 3D mapping through using ”automated technology to extract 3D from aerial images.” Google does this by flying planes in a tightly-controlled pattern, taking several overlapping images at 45-degrees from four angles. The entire process is apparently “fully automated” without any human interaction. Of course, this is made possible through the use of Google’s many, many, many algorithms.
The result is apparently spectacular and very pleasing to the eyes – a true step above the ’3D’ imagery found on today’s Google Maps. Google is apparently beginning to roll this out in a few cities, …
Google’s Self Driving Car – Still no word on iCar
Remember being a kid and wishing for a car that would drive itself? While watching Flintstones, it’s all that went through my head.. Well that and flying cars i guess. But until recently, even the idea of interconnecting self driving cars was absurd. Or at least we thought so!
It seems Google has been trying to make this wish a reality for quite some time and now we’re closer than ever – don’t get me wrong we’re years and years away from fully automated cars. But this is still pretty ridiculous to say the least! Have a look at the video below for a better understanding!
So even though this is strictly a test car, and the visually impaired man, …
Google Maps: Another 4.0 Update
Just a quick one here guys. And to be honest, it’s not the greatest of Quickies. Google has just updated their mapping application – Google Maps – and just like everything else that Google updates these days, it can only be downloaded by users of Android 4.0 and above. Just like Chrome browser for Android!
For all you 4.0 users, this is what you’ll be getting: basically nothing. While there may have been a few bug fixes here and there (like most updates), Google is really just tying to cover their tracks. Due to all the penitent court cases going on between Google and Apple, Google has decided to remove the physical home button from Android 4.0. Basically this …
CES: It’s not run by Google, but you’d probably think it is
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has been hit by a slew of Google and Android related products. This ranges from Fujitsu’s super-thin new phone, to LG’s announcement of joining the Google TV brigade along with other OEMs.
Google seems to be anywhere and everywhere, the omniscient: and now more so than ever!
At CES, Google has made it possible for anybody with an Android phone to locate both themselves and any area of the show through Google Maps. This is known as ‘indoor mapping,’ which Google released in an update to Android phones back in November. This has also been extended to select resorts and casinos around Las Vegas, as well as to local Best …
