Android tablets overtake Apple’s long held market lead in the tablet sphere
For far too long, Apples iPads have dominated the consumer tablet realm. However just last month the research firm IDC predicted that all of this was set to change.
Based on IDC’s data, in the first three months of 2013 there were approximately 49.2 million tablets shipped. Of which, 27.8 million ran Android and 19.5 million were iPads.
Whilst Apple is still the single largest tablet manufacturer in the world, Samsung is rapidly gaining on the US technology giant. Samsung shipped 8.8 million Android tablets in the first quarter of 2013.
To illustrate the drastic movements in market share, last year’s numbers for Q1 2013 shows that Apple dominated the tablet market with 58.1% compared to Samsung’s 11.3%. In contrast, …
Good Deal: 4G Samsung Galaxy S III from Kogan for just $379
Here’s an evening deal for you: Samsung’s Galaxy S III 4G i9305 (16GB, Black) for $379!
That’s right folks. Kogan’s at it again with their ridiculously low pricing. Not so long ago, the Samsung Galaxy S III i9300 was priced at $530 and I was thinking ‘wow’. Its LTE brother was priced slightly higher. Now, they’re both priced at a jaw dropping $379!
Note: This might be a misprint as the non 4G version is also priced the same. This doesn’t really make much sense. So if you’re looking out for a new smartphone, I’d be pulling out the credit card before Kogan change the prices!
Make sure to tell us if you do!

AOSP headed to the Sony Xperia Z
Have you been holding out on Sony’s Xperia Z, or have one and just aren’t sure where to take things next? Well, Sony have announced the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) will now be headed for their flagship device. Like the Xperia S (which was Sony’s first foray into AOSP), the Z can hope to improve upon collaborative efforts and benefit from the wide development community.
Sony have stated that the software isn’t presently intended for everyday use – everything is still quite fresh and from the looks of things, Sony are definitely hoping to build things from the ground up, so if you have the Xperia Z you should know what you’re doing before you go ahead and flash …
Telstra releases video highlighting major features of the Galaxy S4
Up until this point of the evening, there’s been little we’ve heard from Telstra’s side with regards to pre-orders of the Galaxy S4. We can assume at least that the device will be available on the carrier along with the other main carriers from the 27th of April.
What Telstra have done is release a ‘features overview’ video of the device on YouTube, presenting just that – the features, and what customers can hope to expect of the device on their 4G network.
For those of you who are (still) not yet aware of the S4′s features, or feel like seeing the device under a familiar Australian backdrop – be sure to check out the source video below.
Update: We’ve …

Update: Virgin Mobile have let us know that they have no preorders.

Kogan is selling the Galaxy S4 for $100 cheaper than Samsung’s RRP
It’s just been announced that the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be officially priced at $899 for the 16GB version. Keep in mind that this is for the quad-core variant that the Australian market will be receiving. Kogan however, have listed the Galaxy S4 16GB Octa-core version for a $100 less. That’s $799 for possibly getting the octa-core version!
The specifications page on the Kogan website lists the processor as 1.9 Quad Core/1.6 Octa-Core. The meaning of this is ambiguous. Whether it means that Kogan will be shipping whatever they can get their hands on, or whether it’s just a simple typo one cannot tell at the moment. We will keep you updated on this when we hear more.

So it’s the Galaxy S4, but did you know…?
We’re here following the live twitter feed from Norman at the Australian Samsung Galaxy S4 launch event. After walking the long Samsung blue carpet and watching appearances by strongmen and other performers wearing fish tanks on their heads, Norman endured a lengthy musical performance including the likes of Guy Sebastian.
Unfortunately, the loud music deafened Norman so we’re here summarising the hilarious nature of what we can ascertain out of Norman’s commentary:
- The S4 brings Samsung’s S Health and S Translator to its already established S range of software “enhancements”, prompting Norman to get the S Hits
- The screen is a 1080p Super AMOLED screen with 441ppi that uses 14% less power (than…?)
- The S4 has a premium finish, utilising

Love watching TV wherever you are? Well Samsung have announced their WatchON app which allows individuals to either watch TV on their Samsung device, or use it as a TV remote will be launching in July.
The greater piece of news here however is that the Foxtel Go app will be coming exclusively to Android powered Samsung devices in June. Samsung Smart View launches in May, mirror TV to your Samsung phone
At the Samsung event this evening we learnt from Norman Ma that Sammy will be introducing some great new software features to Australians. We’ve heard about WatchON, which is similar to Foxtel Go.
However, Samsung is also bringing us some other cool stuff in the form of Smart View. As far as we know, Smart View is a service to mirror content from your TV to your Samsung smartphone. We assume you will need a Samsung Smart TV for this to work in conjunction with, but we could be proved wrong.

HTC One using Nokia-Exclusive Microphone Technology?
ST Microelectronics, a company that provides hardware components, has recently been found to have supplied HTC with microphone components for their upcoming flagship, the HTC One, that were supposed to be exclusively for Nokia.
A district court in Amsterdam has agreed that The One might be using Nokia-exclusive microphone technology, and has granted Nokia a preliminary injunction. Apparently, the dual membrane microphone setup seen in the One was manufactured using technology solely meant for Nokia phones. This implies a direct breach of an NDA signed by ST between Nokia and themselves.
This can only spell disaster for HTC. The already delayed One may face further sales problems if this is found to be true. A recent profits analysis shows …
Did Sony just hit 4.6 million Xperia Z sales in 40 days?
When Sony announced the Xperia Z smartphone, many Sony and Android fans were salivating at the sexy design (even one of my non-Android using friends, who has since bought one, kept going on about how sexy it looked). Its stunning looks were backed up by high end internal specs along with it being water and dust proof. Suffice to say, we were expecting big things from this Sony phone – but coming from a company that over the past few years has trailed the other manufacturers, this was probably a tall ask.
Well, some months after its original release in Japan subsequently followed by rolling global releases including its Australian release, analysts are predicting that Sony may have sold 4.6 …
