App Review: Plague Inc.

unnamed

Ever just wanted to kill everyone? I mean, everyone. Completely wipe out the entire human race so that Earth is nothing but a wasteland – void of any life whatsoever. I’m talking I Am Legend-sorta destruction here. Now what if I told you I could make this a reality? What if I could transform all of your demented desires and dreams into something real? Before you call ASIO or the Federal Police, let me explain.

I’m talking of course about Plague Inc., probably the best thing to happen to Android ever (I’m just kidding Josh (Not really)). My love for it shouldn’t come as a surprise to any of you that follow me on Twitter, with my …

Draw a Dragon, get a custom S III

samsung-canada-dragon

Whilst this isn’t quite news, don’t even try and tell me that you’re not interested in how and why a man in Canada received a dragon-embossed S III compliments of Samsung. It all started on reddit, when user Perma decided to post a screenshot of his post on the Samsung Canada Facebook page. He’d drawn them a dragon, in hopes of attaining a free Galaxy S III.

He was met with disappointment, but was fortunate enough to receive a drawing of a kangaroo on a unicycle in return.

Until today, 3 months after the Facebook message, when Perma made a post on reddit, showing off Samsung’s gift to him. An S III with that very same …

Review: Philips Fidelio Speakers for Android

philsdss

‘They were just so close to getting it right’

“Even with the $300 price tag, the Fidelio speakers for Android by Philips are outstanding. The quality of its sound and its other features are desirable, but the true value of the device is compromised by the manufacturer’s inability to realistically gauge what users want.”

Pros Cons
High sound quality Not portable / no batteries
Attractive design Quite big and bulky
Useful remote Philips’ app Songbird very intrusive
Works with other bluetooth devices Expensive

WHAT WE LIKED

I’ll be completely honest with you. I’ve never really owned a set of good high quality speakers. I bought the 5.1 Logitech Speakers that EB Games used to sell for $50-$75 and used …

Editorial: You’re going to get left behind

g+ssss

Whilst this post isn’t a piece of Android news or a review, it’s something I felt the need to say. Something I believe is generally known by many in our tight knit community but all too often forgotten, at a time where taking notice of it is crucial.

I have to make this quick. I don’t have much time. I have to write this post. It has to be edited. Feature images have to be made and formatting has to be done. It has to be posted. Then people have to find out about it. We’ll post it on our page on Facebook. Then on our personal Facebook accounts. Time for Twitter. Don’t forget to add hashtags. Retweet on personal …

Galaxy Note 10.1 in Hong Kong August 16th for $609

galaxy-note-10-1

We’ve just discovered in a press release via The Verge that the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is expected to be on sale in Hong Kong on August 16th, 2 weeks earlier than the anticipated global release date. The 3G variety will retail for HKD 4,998, which equates to about $609 AUD. It’s actually quite an affordable tablet if Australia is fortunate enough to have a similar price.

As we’ve previously reported, the latest addition to the Galaxy family is expected to be released in Australia before the end of August. It’s specs are quite nice, with it running the quad-core Exynos 4, weighing 600 grams and packing 2GB of RAM. It will also be shipping with Android …

Ouya Kickstarter project finishes its 30 day funding period with $8.6 million

ouyyaaaaa1

It’s no secret that I’ve been excited for the $99 Android video game console, Ouya, since before day one of its successful Kickstarter campaign. And I’m not the only one. We here at Android Australia have supported the Kickstarter project financially too, ensuring that we’ll have a unit to review.

Early today the opportunity to fund Ouya on Kickstarter came to end, with OUYA receiving $8,596,178 in funding – $7,646,178 over their required amount of $950,000.

The device is expected to ship to backers in March-April 2013, as the team behind OUYA rush to get it ready and ensure the support and commitment of game developers worldwide. The response has been good, with companies like OnLive promising to deliver …

The Verge releases Android app

unnamed

One of our favourite sites to follow here at Android Australia is The Verge, and we’re proud to support (one of) the best online resource(s) for technology news in the world. Today they released their first Android app, along with an iOS one that got taken for a ride by Apple.

The app is really quite good and fast. They’ve split it up into several sections, and somehow managed to make the app as complicated as their website. There are News, Sections & Media parts of the app, which can then be filtered further through the Hubs, Brands & Categories selectors. The Verge have also included a new Following feature in the app that allows you …

Jelly Bean starts rolling out to the unlocked Galaxy Nexus today

Nexus-Jelly-Beanas

We thought we still had a few days to wait before Jelly Bean 4.1 would be arriving on the Galaxy Nexus, but it looks like we were wrong. Reports are popping up all over the place that unlocked Galaxy Nexus devices have already started to see the update popup on their phone. Yesterday we heard that Jelly Bean 4.1 had been rolling out to the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus, which Google announced, but now it seems that all owners of the Nexus will receive the latest Android operating system!

The few of us at Android Australia with a Galaxy Nexus have been repeatedly checking for updates but haven’t been fortunate enough to see it available yet.

Let us …

Telstra responds to Galaxy Nexus backlash

telrelpy

Yesterday we reported on Telstra’s decision to remove Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus from its selection of Android phones. Readers were obviously quite concerned, with the Galaxy Nexus being one of the most popular Android devices available. We received comments like James Knight’s suggesting that this was “Proof that Telstra is out of touch”, with other readers claiming it’s a justified move by the telco as the Nexus hasn’t been selling well compared to Samsung’s Galaxy S II and S III, at both Telstra and Optus.

We recieved some feedback from Telstra themselves on our Google+ page. After one reader was concerned their Telstra Galaxy Nexus wouldn’t receive the Jellybean 4.1 update, Telstra responded, promising to continue its support for …

Amazon Kindle smartphone becoming more of a reality

amazon-kindle-smartphone

According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon’s rumoured Android smartphone is already in its testing stage. The device, presumably to be a member of the Kindle family with a 4-5 inch screen, is not expected any time soon, according to “Amazon’s parts suppliers, who [obviously] declined to be named.” Production is expected to start sometime later this year or early 2013.

It’s also expected that the device will be sold at close to cost price, like the Kindle Fire, and closely integrated with the Amazon network. Android Authority are predicting that the device may be sold directly by Amazon similar to Google’s decision to sell the Nexus 7 (along with other devices) directly through the play store.

The likelihood of …

Pandora Radio is back in Australia, with an Android app too

unnamed

I’ve waited 6 years for this day. I don’t remember how or when exactly but I was young, maybe 12 or 13 at the time, but somehow I happened upon Pandora. It was music to my ears, literally. The ability to legally stream music online and discover artists and songs I could never have found otherwise was incredible. Pandora listened to music with me and efficiently learnt what I wanted to hear and gave it to me. I still listen to a couple artists Pandora showed me back then and every time I hear those songs, it reminds me of a better time.

One day I logged on and noticed it was blocked. My heart sunk. How could they …
