Evening poll: So, are you considering a Surface RT or an iPad Mini tablet?

afternoon-poll-msft-apple

While we’re focused on Android related news, we’d be remiss to ignore what else is going on in the tech world, and today the big news is both Microsoft and Apple are poised to release their newest entrants into the tablet space. Firstly, Microsoft has released pricing information and opened preorders for their upcoming Surface tablet, running Windows RT. The Surface RT is priced at $559 for the 32GB model, is aiming to be delivered to customers by October 26, and spec-wise is roughly on par with the current 10″ Android tablets in the market.

Secondly, Apple has announced a special event for October 23, where they are expected to announce a 7″ iPad that has been leaked to death over the Internet, and is rumoured to arrive at a $299 price point.

Both of these devices are potentially very strong competitors in the tablet space, and perhaps Google will have to redouble its efforts to maintain market share.

Do either of these devices pique your interest? Vote in the poll below, and let us know more in the comments!

I would really like a Surface but am saving the dough for other things at the moment. If I needed a new tablet/laptop now I’d definitely go for the Surface or the upcoming Samsung ATIV.

Tempted by the surface, but the OS still has me concerned.

AND I’m still looking longingly at the ASUS TF700 thingos in the shops. I want me some 1080p capable tablet action.

it shouldnt win8 and its metr..sorry windows 8 style interface is build for touch and tablets, if win8 is going to be good anywhere its on tablets, the underlying os itself has proven to be win7 good not vista bad its only the interface(s) causing issues atm

im interested in seeing the real price point for the ipad mini, its not like apple to produce a product thats anything close to competitive in price they usually rely on “superior features”…and sheep to sell there wares, a competitively priced but still outstanding in the few places apple does actually succeed, hdd space and display would be intriguing, i probably still wouldn’t buy one as i just like android more, perhaps im more intrigued to see, if they do release a “cheap” product what the apple fandom will

the surface is interesting but again if im going to have a tablet it will be android, i dont have a desktop pc anymore and barely use my laptop so i have no ties to the windows/microsoft eco system really so thats not a draw

I think a lot of people are going to be fooled into buying cheap Windows 8 RT gear only to find it’s not what they thought it was…

I love Android, and I’m getting a lot of use out of my original Transformer. But I feel that I’d like to use my Transformer more as an ultraportable laptop. Android’s great on a phone, but I think I want something that’s closer to a desktop OS on my next tablet/laptop/ultaportable device. Importantly I want something with split-screen multitasking. For that reason I think my next device might be a Windows 8 tablet with keyboard like the Surface, or possibly simply a touch-screen ultrabook.

I don’t understand how people can think that iOS is a good tablet OS. I mean yeah great app selection, no doubt about it, but you’re working with a OS with LESS freedom and power than Android, on a device that you want to be MORE like a laptop replacement? I get frustrated with the limit of what I can do on my tablet using Android, I shudder to think how I’d handle iOS.

Saying that, if Android simply allowed you to split your screen and run two apps side-by-side, that would possibly satisfy my cravings and convince me to stick with the ASUS Transformer line.
