samsung_galaxy_siii_mini

Samsung overnight made the Galaxy S III Mini official. It’s basically a Galaxy S III-like design with Galaxy S II specs under the hood. Except, for one major point – the Mini is running on Android’s latest and greatest, Jelly Bean.

Here’s the specs as we know them:

  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • 4-inch Super AMOLED display (800 x 480) display
  • dual-core 1GHz processor
  • No LTE support
  • 1,500 mAh battery
  • 5MP camera
  • NFC
  • 8GB or 16GB variants
  • 111.5g

We’ve already approached Samsung Australia on the matter and this is what they had to say:

Samsung Electronics Australia is pleased there is interest about the GALAXY S III mini in Australia, but we are unable to make any announcements at this time.

We also already know that Crazy John’s hinted at the possibility of bringing it to Australia based on the success overseas. We’ll see how this pans out.

Not sure if I’m pleased or disappointed at this announcement.

      I’m disappointed.

I can sympathize with people with smaller hands (such as girls) who want a high-end device but feel that the 4.7″ screens popular on the current batch of flagship phones is just too big for them. My hands are quite large and I feel my One X is about as big a device as I’d want for a phone.

Is it really too much to ask for a phone with flagship specs but a more modest, 4.0-4.3″ inch screen for these smaller-handed people? With a name like Galaxy SIII Mini that’s what I was expecting/hoping for.

Not only that but Galaxy S name has always been synonymous with flagship specs. Now it seems a shame to sully the name with such a mid-level phone.

Spot on, this is a really disappointing announcement. It’s a shame that Samsung have gone down this path and it looks like they may be taking the ‘people will buy it anyway’ approach, sadly.

If someone wants a smaller phone I will always recommend the Motorola RAZR M now.

nice device pity about the lack of australian sale for now, i cant see how aus is such a bad place to sell phones, we have plans that beat other places hands down (although we get destroyed in value by others) and we buy alot of phones so i wonder why its so much of a big deal for oems to sell here ( i blame our carriers)

This is why I grey import. A lot less f***ing around with contracts etc and we can actually get it.

Get the new SGS3 Mini! Has a 4″ screen, 1Ghz dual-core (NON EXYNOS) Soc, big bezel design… But wait, IT ONLY COSTS ~$500 compared to the $379 SGS2 from Kogan! Samsung..
