Rumour: Will we see a new Nexus phone and a new Android release in the next 30 days?

Nexus

Android and Me is reporting a rumour from multiple industry sources that claim that we should expect to see a new Nexus phone, replete with a new point release of Android, in the next 30 days. Interestingly, the sources claim that the device has already been leaked through blogs, which likely narrows the field down to a couple of devices that we’ve heard of before: an Optimus Nexus by LG and a 5-inch phablet by HTC.

Recently, Google has managed to keep things hush-hush; we’ve seen little concrete evidence of a new version of Android which A&M interprets to be a 4.2 rather than a 5.0 overhaul. The Optimus G has already been announced, the Droid Incredible HD for Verizon has been spotted, both of which could plausibly form the basis of the next Nexus phone. On the whole though, Google and its OEM partner (whoever it is) has done a very good job of controlling any leaks, which is more than can be said about other recent phone announcements (*ahem* Apple *ahem*).

The timing of this announcement makes sense – it’s been a while since the last phone-related announcement by Google, they would very likely not want to miss the important pre-Christmas sales season, and perhaps they’re also hoping to take a little edge off Microsoft’s combined Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 launch at the end of this month.

One other interesting point on which to speculate – the Galaxy Nexus is no longer on sale at any major Australian carriers and phone retailers, which indicates it could be about time for a new Nexus phone. Considering the success Google has had at selling the Nexus 7 through its own channels, it could also be possible that they’re planning to sell this new device through their own distribution channels in the same way.

Should we expect to see Google to make an Android/Nexus related announcement in the next 30 days? Sound off in the comments!

announced maybe, released to the general public, i doubt it, i rekon they would have announced a coming soon of sorts by now if the release was before end of oct, but it is almost nexus device announcing time so im gonna hedge bets on announcement not release.

also seems way to close to the release of jellybean for them to push out anything more then a 4.1.2 i doubt there be a release worthy of a new name already

I think this phone will have to be 4G. So, it will either come to Australia:

      - Before 2013 but won’t be stocked by Telstra.
      - Before 2013 and be sold by other carriers or be a Google Play exclusive.
      - In 2013 and hence we will have a wait on our hands.

Quite interesting to see how it will play out really.

ha ye i didnt even factor the wait for it to show up at our carriers, im definitely buying direct if they offer it, good point on 4g too pretty much a much or all high end phones from now i think

Surely. It has to be soon.

If the hardware is actually competitive with other current Android flagships (HOX, GS3), this is gonna be a pretty big deal. Lots of Android fans are hanging out for the next Nexus.

I’m hanging out for the Nexus and hoping it comes rocking those specs in the rumoured HTC Nexus (and HTC design too). I think Google will need to place a lot of emphasis on design and making the device ‘beautiful’ this time around. That way they can compete directly with Apple and make a device that is as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside (with Jelly Bean or newer Android variant).

I hope the new Nexus device will be shipped with Android’s new release 5.x (not 4.1.x).

Not sure whether it will happen.

i think its fair to expect a yearly release of major version jumps (ie name change worthy) and since its only been a few months since jelly bean hit i wouldnt hold your breath for a new version before the end of the year, besides whats wrong with jellybean? speaking of i would expect android to venture far from the track laid out by ICS and JB anytime soon so if the experience of those arent working for id look at customisation as the venue for change.
