Details leak of the rumoured LG Optimus Nexus, announcement almost guaranteed

SONY DSC

Details have leaked overnight of a whole slew of information about the next Nexus phone and Android 4.2. For starters, according to CNET the LG Optimus Nexus is supposedly guaranteed and poised to be unveiled officially at the end of October. What’s coming at the end of October? AllThingsD are holding one of their annual events that Andy Rubin will be attending – sound familiar? Motorola Xoom anyone?

While we can’t be 100% sure of the impending announcement, CNET has said that “according to a person briefed on the matter” it will be unveiled in the latter part of October and will launch in mid-November. But what will we be seeing on the inside? Paul O’Brien, founder of MoDaCo, is reporting that he has had a fairly beefed up spec list available to him. Here’s how it reads directly from the post over on MoDaCo.

  • The device is based on the Optimus G but doesn’t look the same
  • Updated Android release (currently 4.2)
  • Quad Core Snapdragon S4 processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 1280×768 True-HD IPS screen
  • On screen soft keys (of course)
  • 8 Megapixel Camera
  • No microSD slot
  • 8GB and 16GB versions only (at least initially)
  • Non-removable battery
  • Wireless charging built in
  • The retail name of the device is yet to be decided.
While a few of these specs are to be expected, the bolded points are what really surprised Paul and us over here and Android Australia. In true Google fashion, the microSD slot is not included. However, they’ve also elected to bump down the storage to 8GB and 16GB variants, with a non-removable battery to top it off. What on earth is Google thinking? I know that they want to push their cloud services on us, but that’s just a bit extreme in my opinion.
Especially for those of us down under, where Google Music, Magazines and TV Shows are not available – what are we meant to do Google? Of course, these are just rumours for the time being and we must take them with many grains of salt. However, MoDaCo does tend to be on the ball and many other news outlets are giving legitimacy to these rumours too.
We’re hearing word about a possible Motorola RAZR Nexus over on Android Police too and a possible Nexus 10 that may in fact also be made by Moto – no preferential treatment there! Rumours are flying in from south, west and north so stay tuned on this one. We know we will!

Didn’t excite you? Good thing Optus are supposedly testing it. ;-)

Surely after the Nexus 7 it’s hardly surprising that the next Nexus phone will have a built-in battery and non-expandable storage.

I agree it’s a bit of a bummer, but in my opinion a worthwhile tradeoff considering the rumoured specs. Combined with some of the other software rumours floating around (customisation centre, project roadrunner) this is shaping up to be one of the most hotly anticipated Android release yet. I’m psyched!

Very true about the Nexus 7, I actually didn’t think about that. Definitely a worthwhile trade-off, but I’d really like to see some more storage options – that’s the one trade-off that got me.

    What about 4G???

I need the fastest speed to DL all those prayers to my email :)

No word yet, but I assume it will have an LTE radio.

I don’t care who makes it or any of the specs apart from that it has that awesome S4 Pro ;)

You won’t get my money without a minimum of 32gb storage.

interesting, id like to think google has learnt a thing or two from the N7, with the listing leaks of the 32GB version of the N7 it would appear they have noticed the call for more storage space, but then these rumor would make you think otherwise

either way the s4 and 2gb ram is nothing to scoff at even with only 16gb behind it

FYI AA: i had to look twice to see “the bolded points”, they dont stick out much (chrome on mac osx ;))
