Android 4.2, Optimus G Nexus, Galaxy Nexus 2, 32GB Nexus 7 in the works?

Nexus times two

Boy, there’s a load of Nexus rumours doing their rounds today! While we’ve heard about the potential Galaxy Nexus 2 and Optimus G Nexus before, we’ve never come across news as substantial as what we’re hearing today. Furthermore, we’ve today heard our first word of a Nexus 7 with some ramped up storage capabilities – exciting times for Nexus and Android fans it is! Ah, this time of the year again. I’ll start this piece with the Nexus 7 tablet rumour.

Over in the UK a Carphone Warehouse database has had an image snapped of it with some very interesting listings up. First up, the listing clearly states that there is a “Nexus Asus 7in tablet 32GB WiFi Tegra 3,” which could only really mean two things. First, the listing could have the wrong numbers put in, or, there could be a Nexus 7 on the way with more storage. We’re hoping it’s the latter and would be very welcome to the idea of a Nexus 7 with greater storage options.

The second oft rumour is about the Galaxy Nexus 2 (GT-i9260). However, this one is a bit more far-fetched than we would like. The same inventory system talks about a “Samsung Nexus 2.” Could this be the Galaxy Nexus, which is Samsung’s second attempt at the Nexus phone? Or, could this be a newer version of the Galaxy Nexus? We’ve heard before of a slight spec-bumped Galaxy Nexus 2 in the works, which has sometimes looked more like it’s just a new Samsung products – perhaps that Galaxy Mini III that is supposedly being announced on October 11?

Now however, this is where things get exciting. We have two more rumours floating around that have really got me all worked up and in a nerd-gasm. This side of the rumour comes from an extensive report by the guys over at Android And Me that cites tips that came from a “regular source who has provided accurate information in the past.” Based on the stature of Android And Me and their insider information we can take this and work with it.

We’ve spoken in the past that their might in fact be more than one Nexus device this year, but we’ve never heard of something as exciting as this. A&M is reporting that the entire idea of the Nexus is going to be changing – and for the better! It starts off with Android 4.2, a slightly improved version of the Android OS. It will include slight modifications, homescreens appearing as tabs  and gearing up for Android 5.0. It will also involve a “customization center” which would essentially allow users to choose between the stock Android experience and the OEMs skin. You’d have a centre for the skins you can choose from, hence giving Android users what they want – more customization. It’s not exactly clear what the customization centre would include but this is a very welcome feature and something that many of us have really been desiring for a very, very long time.

But, what is the point of a new Android OS variant if we have no phones to talk about? Well, besides for the Galaxy Nexus 2 that we’ve already mentioned in this article, there’s another phone that is doing the rounds. That is, the LG Optimus G Nexus. Again, the guys over at A&M are hearing some fairly concrete evidence about LG and Google hosting a joint event shortly to announce the next Nexus. While it may not be the only Nexus, this is the only one that has some real steam behind it.

The Optimus G Nexus (what a mouthful that is!) is expected to be announced in November, along with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Based on the specs seen in LG’s Optimus G, this thing could be one heck of a device – I can’t wait!

Seeing as though the Nexus announcement was meant to occur some time this month, be sure to hear more news as it comes in. It does look like we’ll be seeing Android 4.2, an Optimus G Nexus (or Optimus Nexus), a 32GB Nexus 7 and perhaps a second Galaxy Nexus coming at us shortly. If you hear anything on the grapevine then be sure to contact us. Until next time, over and out.

Why it is not a HTC or MOTO Nexus phone?

I don’t like Samsung and LG.

That’s the rub- it’s no longer going to be the current model of one manufacturer, one chip, one Nexus. If you don’t like the LG Nexus G Optimus G whatever it’s called, someone else will also make one, so long as it conforms to Google’s requirements – check out the source article for more detail.

Of course, I shudder to think what this means for device maintainers at Goggle if the have to deal with multiple phones…

i think lets say 5 every year or better yet every two years is entirely ok for us to expect them to be able to handle

    • Cam Charles

like norman said if the “range of nexus” rumor is true we will see nexus devices from each OEM released at the same time instead of one from the top oem at the time

  • Cam Charles

i hope they drop that G from optimus G nexus lol because thats a really good looking phone interested to see what its specs shake out to be if its real

i do so hope for a line up of nexii it would be a great boom for android, i dont care if manufacturers would be annoyed, its good for us the consumer and forces them to make better phones outside the nexus range.

i like the customisation center thing too really intrigued to see how that pans out, the ability to switch out oem skins is good as it means technically all phones can be vanilla but the ability to make my own skin, dear god that would be heaven, since phones first started i have found ways to tinker with the theme, from the old school 3315 and its simple black and white wallpapers to symbian and its full theme replacement and a little bit of android theme swapping (not as easy as id like therefore havent gone full throttle) and im not alone there was and is a big group of people who like the theme, i hope the customisation center offers that :D

Isn’t Jellybean 4.1 not 4.2? I thought 4.2 was in development and to be called ‘Lime Pie’ or something…?

    I’m confused :/

    • http://androidaustralia.com.au Josh Berg

4.1 is Jelly Bean and is available now for certain phones. Android 4.2 is the next version which we expect to be announced in about a month! :-)

key lime pie is the internet’s chosen dessert for the next named release of android, because its one of the only desserts starting with ‘k’
