Xbox SmartGlass for Android debuts early, get it now

unnamed (4)

We reported very recently that Xbox SmartGlass for Android would be out in early 2013. Well, it appears that this is not the case – not the case as at all.

This is the app that allows you to control your Xbox from your smartphone, giving you a second screen in the room. If you’re connected to the same WiFi network, which you’d expect anyway, then you can go ahead and never need to use your remote again – unless of course, you’re playing a game.

Before you can sign in, you must have an Xbox Gold membership and be running Android 4.0 or above, which about one quarter of us are on. Overnight, Microsoft has debuted the app for Android and us users can start grabbing it right now!

Got an Xbox, head over to the Play Store now for download.

Here’s some images of the app:

There seems to be a few devices that are incompatible based on OS version and/or screen resolution. Will keep you updated as we find out more.

so after giving this more of ago over the weekend i think i land right in the middle on this one it has some great ups and some let downs

The let down For me is that in allot of cases the app is almost pointless because of one big reason, you need a XBox controller before you can use the app, even if you turn the Xbox on with the button you have to logged in to a gold account with smart glass enabled a feat which requires the controller, I get that switching to the app after logging in would make intensive typing filled YouTube session easier but It just breaks the magic to have to use the controller then switch for the app, also every time the app is minimised or the screen sleeps it loses connection, no doubt to save battery but every time it reconnects you get the connected message, I sure hope they don’t pop up on my friends screen or they will be annoyed.

On the other hand its so great having the on screen keyboard for YouTube sessions and mud battlefield match messaging, plus your achievements and friend activity on a little screen whilst you play, awesome, can’t wait for some games to start utilising it,interested to see what forza horizon is using it for

Hmm, very interesting. I have my final exam on Tuesday so will give this a good spin when I’m done with that. I don’t really ever see it being that useful as a game controller, but more so as a supplementary control.

I get what you’re saying about breaking the magic – I was really hoping this would just work like a charm. Perhaps with some tweaking and in the future?

      Feel like writing up a hands-on? ;)
