There’s a new Google Wallet coming, let’s hope it makes it to Australia
Google Wallet is Google’s own NFC-based mobile payment system. It pretty much works through entering your card details (or purchasing a pre-paid card), placing the details on your phone and using your phone as a kind of PayPass device – it’s brilliant. The problem? It never made it down under.
Down under, we have a few banks that are stepping up and trying to fill the void that has been left for us. CommBank launched their Kaching app, which unfortunately never got the grace of NFC-based payments. At the same time, Westpac and ANZ are currently working on their own versions of NFC-based mobile applications – but we’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands.

If you click on this link, then you’ll be taken to a page where you can sign up to hear about the new Google Wallet – I’d suggest you do it. The coolest thing is that Google is showing us that this will not just be for Android – but iOS and ‘Other’ devices will be in the running too, pretty cool.
There’s no inclination whatsoever as to what this update is about, but we’re hoping that it means we’ll be seeing some Wallet action down under. This is coming in just one week before Google’s big announcement on the 29th of this month, so it could tie in with the ‘Playground is open.’ Let’s start getting excited people.
