Upcoming HTC ‘phablet’ has some key specifications leak: quad-core, 1.5GB RAM

Remember that HTC device that we’ve written on a few times? The one that I originally thought could be that rumoured Beats By Dre phone, but is now looking to be HTC’s phablet. Well, it turns out that over the weekend there’s been a bit more news leak in regards to what exactly we could be seeing.

While the specs do suggest that this is the HTC powerhouse ‘phablet’ that we have been waiting for, some of the key points don’t match up with previous speculation. However, this news does come from reported ‘insiders’ that HTC Source has within the company.

So, here’s the rumoured specs:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor (quad-core, LTE)
  • 5-inch display
  • 1.5 GB of RAM
  • 16 GB of internal storage (non-expandable)
  • Extra notification light on rear

Based on the insider’s work, it looks like the newest upcoming HTC phone will be packing some serious specs under the hood. The quad-core S4 processor is no laughing matter. It has outperformed the Tegra 3 SoC in many tests, as well as many other high-performance chips. Seeing as though HTC tend to cheap-out on the RAM at times, the 1.5GB of RAM is also very welcome. This makes it one of the devices with the most RAM available, but still falls short of the Galaxy S III 4G, the upcoming Galaxy Note II and LG Optimus G.

One thing is for sure though, this device will be damn powerful and get more than the job done for most of you.

The unfortunate thing, though, is that HTC’s upcoming 5-inch device won’t have support for a stylus of any sort. Seeing as though Samsung already dominate this field with the S Pen as a major draw towards the Galaxy Note II, it is quite sad to see that HTC’s phone won’t be capable of the same things. This makes the HTC phone basically a larger (XXL) version of the One X. Of course, this news is not to be taken without a grain of salt. Everything could change come HTC’s event for what we expect to be the official announcement on September 19th.

To me, this phone won’t be able to compete too well with the Galaxy Note II. However, if you’re after something which is a little smaller and has HTC’s Sense than this could be the phone for you. I know which one I’m choosing though.
As this phone is yet to be announced there is no word on an Australian release. Don’t worry though, we’ll be shooting emails at HTC as soon as September 19th rolls around. Or, is this the One X+ that recently passed through the FCC?

My biggest concern for this device is not the amount of RAM, as I feel that 1.5GB is easily sufficient, but the limited storage. I would prefer there be a 32GB option, and preferably a 64GB option as well, similar to the way that Samsung and Apple offer the Galaxy SIII and iPhone in 16/32/64GB varieties.
Whilst 16GB might be enough for many people, media-focused users will quickly fill 16GB with movies and music. This is especially true on a larger-screened device, which people are more likely to use to watch movies or TV on the go.
Some people like micro-SD cards, but I feel it’s not necessary as long as you offer the option of plenty of internal storage. 16GB is not plenty.
