HTC set to release a 5-inch 1080p Nexus phone?

GSM Arena is reporting a tip-off from one of their tipsters about the next possible phone in the Nexus brand, this time coming from HTC. Their tipster is suggesting that the 5″ HTC “phablet” that we’ve seen rumoured before will become the Google Nexus 5, running Android 4.1.2 (with bug fixes and other tweaks over the current version of Jelly Bean).

In terms of rumoured specs, the Nexus 5 is claimed to have a 1080p screen, and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC with LTE support (likely the MSM8960 Pro with an Adreno 320 GPU), and a 12MP main camera with 2MP front-facing camera. The tipster also indicates that the phone will have a “super slim design”, a 2500 mAh battery, and up to 64GB internal storage (though no details about whether this is expandable).

We’re leaning towards these specs to have a touch of truth to them; leaks from other manufacturers have indicated that such specs, though powerful compared to the current crop of devices, aren’t as out of reach as we might have thought not too long ago.

There’s no word on whether Google is planning to sell this Nexus 5 and other rumoured Nexus phones through their own channels a la the Nexus 7, but if these specs are even close to accurate we could be potentially seeing some ultra-powerful hardware with pure Android very, very soon.

well the rumours were earlier in the year that google were planning a “line up of nexus devices from various manufacturers” if this is HTC’s offering the other guy certainly have there work cut out, thats going to be hard to beat

If this is HTC’s offering then you can sign me up. If all Nexus phones are running pure Android (with no modifications) then I would definitely opt for HTC. Their build quality is to die for and their hardware is just so… beautiful…

Why do we need WIDER phones? It is getting stupid. The Galaxy Nexus is wide enough. Already uncomfortable. It is something Apple has right…

Thin phones get to me, I can’t type properly on them. When I’ve tried smaller Android (3.7″ mark) I find that I make far too many errors on the keyboard.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – as smartphones get larger, we may see our fine motor skills decrease. Yes, I don’t like that, but boy do I love a large screen.
