Bloomberg says Motorola will release a bezel-free phone by end of year

bezel-less phone

Well what do we have here. Motorola has been very quiet on the mobile scene since Google’s acquisition, releasing only the Motorola RAZR V (check out our review!) as a major phone. While it’s quite a good phone, it isn’t the hero phone that is going to propel Motorola into the front-line of Android phone development. So, what exactly are Moto doing behind the scenes to get back into the mobile realm?

Are they beefing up the specs of the RAZR V? Are they developing some really cool software to compete with what Samsung is bringing to the table, or are they trying to make better looking phones than HTC? Well, according to Bloomberg it appears that Motorola are in fact developing a a phone that has an edge-to-edge display, with no bezel (that black part between the screen and the edge of your phone).

But, this can’t be right? Can it? A phone with a screen covering the entire front? Well, first up, Bloomberg is a very reliable source. We’ve seen many upon many stories come true that originated there. Second, it would make sense for Motorola to do something so out of the blue to make such a stance on the mobile scene once again.

And, third. Yes the third reason. Well, it appears that Motorola and Intel are holding a joint event on September 18th in London. But, this isn’t just any event. The title (as seen above) reads, ‘Let us take you to the edge.’ To the edge of what? The conference room, the world, the universe? Or, is Moto taking us to the edge of their new flaghip phone’s screen with a bezel-less display. For now we simply don’t know any more, but if things pan out over the next week we could be seeing a completely revolutionary phone come out before the end of 2012, hopefully before the Christmas run.

Would you use a phone with a screen that runs from edge-to-edge?

Interestingly if Intel are a partner for this announcement, then assuming that it is a phone being launched means that it’s going to use an Intel chip. Although Motorola have previously stated that they will make Intel phones, it hasn’t yet and neither have any of the other major manufacturers. If this is the first Intel phone from one of the big ones, that could be a very big deal.

big deal indeed, a proper, hopefully well thought out and executed x86 version of android would lead to some interesting things the least of which is more powerful devices, i brought my netbook because it dual booted android, pity it turned out to be a POS poorly ported android imagine the possibility of practically instantly booting android on a laptop for some quick internet or app testing :D
