Unknown phone surfaces, 5″ HTC Hero device or Beats by Dre phone?

beatsimage

A couple of interesting images leaked early this morning of an unknown HTC-built phone. It looks to be very thin, coloured black and red and has the standard Beats logo on the back. What’s interesting is that the phone pictured above (although blurry) looks to actually not have an HTC logo. In fact, you know what – this thing looks more like that rumoured Beats By Dre phone and not an HTC phone. While it looks to have HTC’s distinctive styling I must say that this does not look to be coming from them alone.

What, a Beats By Dre phone you say? Yeah, a few days ago BGR reported that Beats By Dre are in fact working on their own phone that is manufactured by HTC and does not have an HTC logo on it. When asked about the phone, HTC and Beats By Dre declined to comment on the matter. This, of course, could mean anything – but a decline always leads to suspicion.

But, why on earth would Beats By Dre be looking into phone development? The Beats phone is rumoured to take on the same tactics as Amazon’s Kindle Fire, really. It will run on Android but have a heavily customised UI to focus on music consumption. Beats is also reportedly looking into the development of TV sets with Samsung to bring music (and maybe movies?) to your TV set. But we can wait on that one for now.

As always, take this with a grain of salt. However, based on today’s leaks this phone looks more like a Beats By Dre phone than an HTC phone. The black and red colouring, as well as the lack of an HTC logo altogether really points to a Beats phone on the horizon. The question is, would you fork out the dough for a Beats By Dre phone manufactured by HTC?

Some other possibilities that occur to me when I see this:
Red markings is usually a hallmark of a phone destined for Verizon, so we could be seeing a Verizon-specific version of the One X.
The phone does appear to have a lot of the hallmarks of the One X, however the red ring around the camera clearly shows that the camera doesn’t protrude from the back nearly as much as on the One X. Assuming they are using the same camera, this could mean that they’ve done a RAZR MAXX and are producing a slightly fatter One X with a bigger battery. This I think would be a great move by HTC, as an extra mm would still leave the One X a thin phone, but a bigger battery is always a lovely thing.

However I would love this to be the rumoured 5-inch device with the killer processor that popped up in some benchmarks a couple of weeks ago.

If you’re wondering. Yes, there is an HTC logo on the front in small. I was referring to the larger logo usually found on the back that can’t be seen here. It could be that the image is blurry, but I find that as rumours have circulated about a Beats phone, this could be a very true thing.

    Time will tell… :)
