Android phones much less eco friendly than Nokia and BlackBerry alternatives says Vodafone

VodaEcoFriendly

Got an Android phone, but also conscious of the environment? Well, Vodafone appears to be of the belief that Android phones (in general) are less eco friendly than Nokia and BlackBerries. Well, that’s in reference to Vodafone’s Eco Rating scores, which were picked up by one our readers.

Vodafone have been doing something quite interesting behind the scenes. They’ve been ranking their phones on an ‘Eco Friendly’ level through a few different means. All the information tested comes directly from the manufacturer, too.

The phones get ranked by their ‘Green Design,’ ‘Mobile phone life cycle’ and ‘company performance.’ But what do they mean?

Green Design: Does the phone include special features to improve its environmental friendliness?
Mobile phone life cycle: Calculation of the environmental impact of each phone throughout its life.
Company Performance: How committed the OEM is to managing environmental and ethical issues in their operations.

Anyway, the interesting thing here is how poorly Android phones have compared against the BlackBerry and Nokia variants. While only one Android phone (the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2) scores above 3, every single BlackBerry or Nokia scored above 3 (out of 5). In fact, Nokia phones are incredibly Eco Friendly according to Vodafone.

I must admit that it is just a little bit strange that Android phones are so low in comparison. But, perhaps, that is the reality we live in. To check out all the phones tested hit the source link below.

Interesting project, I’d like to see it expanded to more handsets and get more publicity. Notice that there were no iPhones on the list. I guess the non-replaceable battery and a design of aluminium glass and plastic glued together to make it difficult if not impossible to recycle would rate it lower than most of not all the Android phones.

One thing that is odd to me is that on all three tests the Galaxy Nexus gets identical to the Galaxy S3 but the S3 gets a higher Eco-Friendly rating!

ok i can see some people buying into this and im guessing there’s been a device our two sold because its greener but really how much do these rankings mean and what’s the actual impact of a 1 over a 5, do owners of a 5 need to simply plant 1 tree to balance the karma vs or the rank 1 having to plant 20 or is it more like 1 tree verses 2??
