[Update: On-sale now] Kogan and Quickflix bring 6 weeks of free movie streaming to a $99 Android device

Update: This package lasts for a 6 week period. While it is still a good deal, it isn’t the ground-breaking partnership we were hoping it was.

This isn’t something that we’d normally cover, but we thought it was an interesting little bit of news. Kogan have been selling the the $99 Kogan Agora HDMI Dongle that brings an Android-powered Smart TV to any TV quite simply. That is, if your TV has an accessible HDMI port. All you need to do is plug the dongle into your TV and start using/playing, simple as that. However, the dongle will now come pre-installed with the QuickFlix application including the ‘all you can view’ subscription package for free. That means that you can now plug the dongle into your TV, start streaming and enjoying some free streamed TV. I can’t quite seem to locate this particular package on the QuickFlix website, but based on its wording I assume that it is a package to view an unlimited amount of movies. In a joint statement, Kogan and Quickflix has this to say:

The Quickflix partnership with Kogan means that the affordable streaming entertainment is now available for all Australians regardless of their budget and without the need for a set top box. We are bringing to market a whole new experience for householders without Pay TV.

I’ve been waiting for something like this for quite a while and think that this could truly revolutionise the TV and streaming scene. This is the first option of a cheap and affordable device that allows you to stream content wirelessly to your TV in ease. While the Quickflix streaming catalogue isn’t that huge, it is definitely getting underway. You can check out all the streaming options at their website. The press release goes on to say:

For years now we’ve been talking and blogging about the future of TV being all about Internet content streaming – watching what you want, when you want. It’s very exciting to now join forces with another great Australian brand and shake things up by making the best content available to any TV – via Quickflix on the Kogan Agora HDMI Dongle. There is now no need to upgrade an existing TV, in order to access the world’s best content. The device will be made available within weeks, with pre-sales commencing from next week.

If you’re interested in grabbing a Kogan Agora HDMI dongle then head over to Android Australia Devices and check out all the information, user reviews and purchase options.

Thanks: Alex!

The Quickflix streaming has a very limited amount of movies. Mostly older movies and HBO series like Entourage. Nothing like what you hear about Netflix

  • Nathan

My Sony Bravia TV shipped with 12 months free Quickflix. It is limited but so is Foxtel via Xbox360 that we also have.

This is a great initiative by Kogan. You just need the bandwidth for it.

    • Greg Jacobson

Yeah, be very careful of that. When I first got Netflix, I got a little carried away and got very close to my bandwidth limit very quickly…

Netflix got me to upgrade from 50GB per month to 200GB.

  • Tim

How do you guys get Netflix?? I understand there’s ways and means to do this from Oz….any hints!!

Tim, do you have a VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

Tim, do you have a VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

  • Tim

No I don’t, have been reading about them…you sign up with one which gives you a US IP address? this is how you get netflix? any suggestions for a good VPN provider?

    • http://androidaustralia.com.au Josh Berg

Yeah, exactly. I use the VPN service called vpnsecure. It’s based in Australia and has really great customer service.

You still need to sign up and pay a monthly fee but in my eyes it’s definitely worth it.

Can I use my phone or tablet as a remote for the Adroid dongle? Or do I have to buy a separate rremote for it?

    • http://androidaustralia.com.au Josh Berg

Hmm, I think you can use your phone. Let me ask Kogan though and I’ll get back to you.

      • Dan

        Thanks Josh.

  • ben

Does anyone know if you can set up the dongle to run through a vpn?

Not sure about this device but I did it on the Androstick. Have you checked for the VPN settings in the main settings?
