Google Play Sales Start

As is tradtional at this time of the year, a selection of Google Play apps have gone on sale to mark the end of summer (in the Northern Hemisphere). There’s a selection of 18 apps that are currently heavily discounted, though keep in mind that in past Google Play sales the apps on sale have been rotated, so the number of apps on sale could change, or the 18 apps on sale could also change over time.

Of the apps that are on sale, there are a few that deserve special mention for those who don’t already have them. Here my special recommendations:

SwiftKey 3: I can’t recommend this keyboard replacement app enough. I know some people prefer a Swype-style keyboard, but having used both extensively I find that SwiftKey 3 remains the keyboard to beat. The text prediction on this keyboard means it is often predicting entire sentences for me. At 75% off this keyboard is a steal – I think it’s a bargain at full price. If you are still using the stock keyboard on your phone, do yourself a favor and give SwiftKey a go.

Beautiful Widgets: An excellent widget app that offers a range of skin-able clock, weather and calendar widgets. The main clock is based on HTC’s Sense clock, but with a huge range of skins available you can always tailor it to your phone’s look. It also has a lovely weather app that you access by clicking on the weather on any of its widgets. This is an app that I’ve used time and time again when I want to spruce up my phone’s theme, and I’d estimate a Beautiful Widget clock has sat front and center of my phone for about 80-90% of my time using Androids.

I’d also like to mention that as well as the Vignette camera app that is officially part of the Play Store End of Summer Sale, another camera app, Camera ZOOM FX is also on sale outside of the official sale. Admittedly Camera ZOOM FX is not discounted as heavily as Vignette, but for those that want to experiment with their phone’s camera, (or the recently announced Android dedicated cameras) there are two highly-rated camera apps available that can be both had quite cheaply.

I still use stock Jelly Bean keyboard on my Galaxy Nexus. Ever since ICS I’ve found the stock keyboard experience to be the best for me and Jelly Bean made it that much better.

When I’ve been testing other phones (especially with a screen smaller than 4″) I almost instantly used SwiftKey.

Jelly bean on galaxy nexus? Where did you get it from?

      • Bob Burgess

Assuming that he bought it outright rather than branded to a carrier then he could just update it. Otherwise it’s quite easy to install a custom ROM on the Nexus. I had Jelly Bean on my One X by installing a custom ROM, but decided to roll back to ICS.

i wish it was that easy for the optus gnex i looked into it a while back and optus’s versioning etc is retarded and made the whole thing daunting lol

Yeah I have an international variant of the Galaxy Nexus, so it gets updated pretty quickly. As Bob said you can also flash it quite easily and get the update that way – but it may void your warranty.

Are they doing the thing this year where they discount a new bunch each day?

    • Bob Burgess

No it doesn’t look that way gurgle, but if it does turn out to be the case I’ll be sure to update this page.

Worth mentioning that this sale actually started on Saturday Morning, 1st of September (1st day of Autumn in US). There has also been Labor Day sales going on and people adding ‘End of Summer Sale’ to the description of their apps, at least that’s what I read on the App Sales post over at Ausdroid.

ye you should only ever follow the proper method to getting to sale apps (apps>banner for sale) rather then searching as some non sale apps show up in searches, or at least they did before, one would hope google put a lid on that
