Facebook updates Messenger application, now allows you to send SMS from within app

Facebook-messenger

So, Facebook updated both their standard Facebook and Facebook Messenger applications last night. While the main Facebook page has a small addition of a Messenger link, the Messenger app is where the real change has come in.

Facebook Messenger now, in fact, allows you to send an SMS directly from the Messenger application. Facebook have ramped up the potential of the Messenger application and this is a major move for the company. In short, Facebook really wants you to spend time on their applications.

The updated SMS features of the app is supposedly only available for a few Android phones, with more to come in time. Here’s the phones available:

  • HTC EVO 3D
  • HTC One X
  • HTC Wildfire S
  • LG Optimus Black
  • LG Optimus Hub
  • Samsung Galaxy Ace
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy S III
  • Samsung Galaxy Y

The update of this app opens up so many possibilities. Are Facebook preparing for their own Facebook phone? Will we soon be sending texts through the desktop version of Facebook?

If you’d like to check out the app for yourself then head over to the Google Play Store.

I think this is a huge missed opportunity for Google. I’ve long thought that Google needs to integrate its SMS, Google Talk, and Google+ Messenger app into a single integrated service. It would SMS people if they had no other contact information, however would automatically reroute that message through the Google+ chat system if the person was online at the time, saving them the cost of an SMS. Importantly it would keep the conversation synch’d no matter what medium the message was sent through, this would also allow you to SMS people from your computer, as the computer could sync with the phone.

Now Facebook haven’t done this yet, they haven’t rolled SMS contacts and Facebook chat contacts together, but they are now very very close, and Google should have done this years ago.

Totally agree. Same as what Apple does with iMessage. Here’s hoping this forces Google’s hand.

Facebook is now very very close. I wanted to write an editorial on this but just didn’t have enough time.

Google’s services are somewhat integrated, but not enough. I send texts from my computer through DeskSMS and my tablet through TabletSMS, both of which work very well. However, the conversations are unfortunately not completely sync’d on all devices. Google has dropped the ball here and needs something internal to come out shortly.

Speaking of which – As soon as I updated the Facebook Messenger all SMS notifications only appear through there. Seriously Facebook? No one likes that…
