Chameleon Launcher hits Google Play, finally
Well after running a very successful Kickstarter campaign, then cancelling that campaign, then starting another campaign, the tablet-centric launcher replacement Chameleon Launcher has finally launched on Google Play!
For those that haven’t been following the saga, Chameleon is a launcher that aims to completely rethink the Android tablet experience. It prominently features large widgets designed specifically for Chameleon launcher and are designed to give your tablet homescreen a unified look. The developers hope that third parties will expand on the range of widgets available, but currently the widgets offered are:
- Calendar
- Clock
- Google+
- Media Player (Coming soon)
- RSS News Reader
- Switches
- YouTube

It also features a mini-app tray for those apps you find yourself using regularly, very similar to the 5-icon dock found at the bottom of Android phones, but oddly absent on tablets.
Finally, it also offers the ability to automatically switch between different homescreen layouts based on time, location, or WiFi-connectivity. This means your tablet could be setup to automatically offer you the latest news and headlines for breakfast; your calendar, appointments and email whilst at work; and your movies and TV shows in the evening (well, at least that’s how I’d do it!).
Now the bad news is that at $9.83 AUD its not a cheap app by any stretch of the imagination, but given what’s on offer and the work that went behind this I think it’s a fair price. Those who feel like trying it out hit the link in the source and if you do try it, let us know what you think.
