Telstra joining the Android update transparency bandwagon, Note to be updated on August 27

It seems as though Telstra has really caught onto the benefits of being as transparent as possible with Android updates. After yesterday announcing their earnings and reports for the 2012 financial year, Telstra have also launched a brand new page for device updates. Well, its not so much a page but more so a forum post – which in my opinion doesn’t work as well.

The post outlines all of Telstra’s phones (Android or not), when they expect the update to be approved and when the roll-out should begin. Telstra also gives us a bit more info with current notes on the updates and what the current status is – quite handy if you ask me.

If you’d like to check it out for yourself then I’d suggest visiting the Telstra update forum post on their Crowd Support forums yourself. A tip of the hat to you Telstra, good work on getting up to scratch.

    dons pessimist hat…its my favourite

firstly i will say this is a great thing the more transparency in one of the biggest areas with the biggest fails of the android ecosystem the better, all carriers should be doing this…but..

2 things annoy me here, the first is my pet hate and one i never see changing and that this “Samsung is preparing an update but is yet to confirm the date it will be submitted for Telstra testing.” on nexus devices, theres absolutely no reason to wait for samsung/asus/moto/whoever to release an update for nexus devices take some initiative and do it yourselves you will reap the rewards.

the second is there is unfortunately nothing holding Telstra to this but faith, lol faith in Telstra, all carriers have had an updates page of some sort unfortunately they tend to gather cob webs quickly and are either vague on dates or just get updated with a new date when one is missed, most update pages will say one thing for so long (like 4.04 is coming) that a new update is released and they simply change the page to 4.1 is coming, it gives false hope and i just know that someone out there has brought a device after seeing a page like this that shows the device will get an update soon, that never comes, and the worst bit is like i said nothing holds telstra too these dates they arent binding and theres enough legal spout in the eulas/contracts you sign that you dont have a leg to stand on should you buy a device expecting an update, thanks to this page and it never comes, which is exactly what should be the case
