Statistics show smartphones the fastest adopted technology, ever.

The latest posted statistics from app tracking company Flurry indicate that (iOS and Android) smartphones is the fastest adopted technology in history. Flurry gathers its statistics from over 200,000 different iOS and Android apps, running on an estimated 640 million devices worldwide.

According to their numbers, penetration of these devices has increased 10 times faster than PCs during the ‘80s, 2 times times faster than the Internet during the ‘90s and 3 times faster than social networks more recently.

Among their results is this figure, which shows the countries with the highest penetration of iOS and Android smartphones in people between the ages of 15 and 64.

Significantly, Australia, with 79% penetration, has the highest penetration of any country with more than 10 million people. We are closely followed by the USA, which with a penetration of 78% has an estimated 165 million active devices.

Although the USA is currently the ‘king of the hill,’ as far as absolute numbers are concerned, this isn’t expected to be the case for much longer. China had a massive 401% year-on-year growth in smartphone activations, easily the largest of any country. With 128 million active phones in China, this huge growth means that China is expected to overtake the USA as the largest smartphone market in the world as early as this summer period.

interesting but not surprising, smart phones are a convergence of technology rather then a new one to adopt, they are a combination of phones, a technology even its mobile form that is ubiquitous and also a computer, arguably the most ubiquitous technology in our lives period.

Compare this with say the rise of computers in general a totally new technology run by basically magic that were cumbersome and took a wealth of knowledge just to use, its easy to see why uptake has been faster for smartphones.

that said im pretty sure “fire” would have been adopted rather quickly too, back in the day, the numbers arent in on the survey for that yet though
