Sony announces Xperia Tablet S, three new Xperia phones

Xperia devices

Well, Sony really had something to say today at IFA. The Japanese company has unveiled four new devices, each of which having a little story behind it.

The new phones are the Sony Xperia T, Sony Xperia V, and Sony Xperia J, in order from high to low range. The Xperia T is Sony’s new flaghship device, coming in with the highest specifications. While Sony has finally managed to launch a phone that isn’t running Gingerbread, they’re still lagging behind in the OS sense with a flagship phone launching on the second most recent Android OS.

The Xperia T is marketed for the high-end, while the Xperia V and J look to be promising budget devices. What’s really quite interesting is that the V is packing a 13 megapixel camera even though it isn’t a top-of-the-line device, which makes sense with Sony’s focus on the camera. If you’re after a cheaper Android with a good camera then the V looks the go. I’ll be attending Sony’s event on the matter this morning for Australian release dates and information and I’ll keep this article updated.

Xperia T:

  • Google Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 4.55″ touchscreen – scratch-resistant LCD
  • 1.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 Dual Core processor
  • 13 megapixel camera
  • 129.4 x 67.3 x 9.35-10.45 mm
  • 139 grams

Xperia V:

  • 4.3 inch scratch-resistant TFT display
  • Google Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • Latest generation 1.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM8960 dual core processor
  • 13 megapixel HD camera with auto focus
  • 120 grams
  • 129 x 65 x 10.7 mm

Xperia J:

  • Google Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 4 inch scratch-resistant TFT display
  • 1 GHz Qualcomm processor
  • 5 megapixel camera
  • 124.3 x 61 x 9.2 mm
  • 130 grams

The new tablet is the one we had been expecting, the Sony Xperia Tablet S. It’s much thinner than the original Tablet S and has a smaller ‘handle’ if you will. I had a lot of fun when I tested the Tablet S and have no doubt that the Xperia Tablet S will provide a really great experience – I just wish it had Jelly Bean.

Specifications:

  • Tegra 3 chip
  • Android 4.0
  • up to 64GB of internal storage.
  • .35 inches at its thinnest point.
  • Built in Infrared
  • Full-sized SD card slot

Sony have also made quite a nice ‘imagination-filled’ advertisement for the Xperia Tablet S, too:
