JB Hi-Fi selling the reasonably spec’d ZTE Telstra Urbane for just $149

telstrazte

Update: I called up JB Hi-Fi to get the low-down on the processor in the Urbane. It turns out that they were hiding it for a reason. The Urbane runs on a 600 MHz single-core Snapdragon processor. No, it’s not the beast I was hoping for and no it’s not the 1GHz single-core that would get the job done. This processor is a bit on the slow side, but we wont know for sure until we get ourselves a hands-on.

ZTE have updated their page to say that this has a 1GHz processor. We’ll have to go by their and JB Hi-Fi’s word that the device does in fact have a 1GHz processor.

A big thanks to Alex D. for once again sending through a hot tip on a cheaper phone! His local JB Hi-Fi store is selling the ZTE Telstra Urbane on Telstra pre-paid for just $149. Read on to the specs below and you’ll see just why this is an incredibly low price. For $149, I doubt there is any other phone you could find for a price anywhere near this.

This phone is running ICS, has a 4″ screen and some really decent specs. You can check out ZTE’s official page for the phone here.

Specifications:

  • 600 MHz 1GHz single-core Snapdragon processor
  • 4″ (480×800) display
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Bluetooth 2
  • 3 megapixel camera
  • FM Radio
  • ’2GB RAM expandable up to 32GB with microSD’
  • 140 grams
  • 120.5 x 63.6 x 10.8mm
  • up to 200 hours standby battery life

The website seems to state that it has both 2GB and 2.5GB of RAM, which is absurdly high for such a device. I’d expect that they are referring to the internal memory and the RAM memory is actually different. However, if it is as it says and this phone does in fact have 2GB of RAM then I am buying one right this second.

If you are looking for a cheaper phone that has a whole lot of punch behind it then I’d definitely suggest jumping on this one. Run into your local JB Hi-Fi store and grab one of these before they realise how ridiculously cheap it is for the specs it is running on.

A big thanks for Alex for sending the tip in. Remember, if you ever stumble across anything we’d love to hear your  tips through Twitter or via email – info(at)androidaustralia.com.au

Thanks: Alex!

I think they mean 2GB of ROM and 512MB of RAM. Because they say 2GB on the front page and in specs it says 2.5GB… So yeah, I would say 512MB of RAM. What cpu though?

Good point about the RAM, it sounds about right. I’m not too sure about the processor as I can’t find anything right now. I’ll give JB a call later today and ask them.

It turns out that the phone is running on a 600MHz single-core Snapdragon processor – not what I was hoping for unfortunately. :(

  • Michael

    Processor runs at 1GHz.
    Internal storage is 2.5GB

    • http://androidaustralia.com.au Josh Berg

Michael, I saw the same thing about the processor on JB Hi-Fi’s website. I then called up and they spoke directly with ZTE to find if that was correct. They told me that they spoke to the manufacturer themselves and it has a 600MHz processor and the JB Hi-Fi site had an error.

Just checked this phone out at my local JB HIFI and there is no way this phone has a 600Mhz CPU. Quite slick for a cheap phone

    • http://androidaustralia.com.au Josh Berg

I thought so too but was assured by the JB Hi-Fi staff that they spoke to the product line manufacturing set and they were assured it was 600Mhz… Strange things…

  • will

I’d be really surprised if that was the case. JB HIFI would be in trouble for false advertising if that was true. Even ZTE advertise the CPU being 1Ghz on their web site http://www.zte.com.au/telstra/T22.htm
From what I can tell the T22 is a rebranded N880E sold in China (the first non-nexus phone to run Jelly Bean!)

    • http://androidaustralia.com.au Josh Berg

That may be true but this device runs on Ice Cream Sandwich?

  • will

I guess the only way to be sure is to install an app like ‘Quick System Info PRO’ and see what the CPU really is … maybe an item for your future review?

    • http://androidaustralia.com.au Josh Berg

Maybe I’ll download the app in a JB H-Fi store today or tomorrow and see what I can do! Good idea.

      • will

‘Android System Info’ is another good free app which will give you all of your internal specifics.

  • will

A ZTE Rep on the whirlpool forums has confirmed the advertised specs and has said they have provided more detailed specs on the Aussie zte website.

    • http://androidaustralia.com.au Josh Berg

I’ll have a look later tonight/tomorrow and update this page accordingly. Do you have a link to the thread?

      • Harry

Do u reckon this done will get 4.1?

        Thanks

        • http://androidaustralia.com.au Josh Berg

          I wouldn’t count on it.

Most OEMs won’t designate the funds to updating cheaper devices. That being said, stranger things have happened!

  • Harry

    One in stead of done,
    Duh.

  • hazza

Is anyone aware of a custom rom that will work with the zte?
