Google Play now has personalised recommendations

google-play-logo

Google recently updated their Google Play app for Android. Much like the browser version has done for a little while now, Google Play for Android is displaying ‘recommended apps.’

The recommended apps are a nice addition and provide us with a way to find apps that we wouldn’t necessarily have. We’re not sure how the apps are recommended, but they are definitely sorted by ‘popular in area’ (as seen below), highly downloaded and if friends have +1′d an application.

While the recommendations are accurate, there is definitely some work to be done. The two apps recommended to me on the first page were My Vodafone and AFL Live Official App. The AFL app, I already have and My Vodafone is useless to me as I have no devices on the Vodafone network. I’m sure that in time the recommendations will become more targeted and more meaningful.

If you’d like to view the apps in your own phone then head over to Google Play -> Apps -> Featured (as seen in the image above).

nice little addition, its definitely got some personalised recommendations but most seem to be group/locale based though.

it correctly? recommended me the 2 optus apps first up, im an optus customer so thats alright, it then recommended me 2 apps i have previously installed and uninstalled, bit silly but ok, it then breaks down pretty quickly into things like NFL/AFL and other carrier apps because im an aussie i suppose, but considering i have no sports related apps anywhere nor will my google data contain any sports related things and the fact it already worked out im with optus it seems rather poor, in short these are definitely not fully personalised recommendations but a nice feature none the less

It’s pretty good but I’d really like to see some recommendations that are more relevant to me. Most of them I had already downloaded (what’s the point of recommending that?) or do not use the service of. However, there were a few there that were of interest to me.

ye totally agree, i didn’t even click a single one to find out more info never mind install any from my recommended list, bit of a fail

I hope Google pushes this and puts it on the front page of G Play. I think it could work well.
