Sony has just posted on the Sony Mobile AU Facebook page that at long last the Sony Xperia S is receiving Ice Cream Sandwich down under! The update will be dished out as an via connecting to your computer and you will be notified via a notification in the notification panel.

So, what’s new with the update? Along with a blog post that went up about a week ago, Sony Mobile explained what exactly is new on the Xperia S with ICS in a short video. One of the main features would have to be the new media consumption applications. Sony mentioned this first up and are obviously quite excited about it. The apps look nicer and cleaner, with an ability to stream media across devices.

First off, we’re excited to introduce a completely new way to experience your media – your music, images, videos, movies and films – with our new “WALKMAN”, “Album” and “Movies” applications.

Besides for the standard ICS features, Sony has added in a few extra goodies. As a major fan of the Sony Mobile custom UI, I am quite happy to see what Sony have added in. For one, there is now a refreshed way to add widgets onto your home screen directly from long-pressing on the background and then clicking in the top right of the screen (right image). This was taken out in the stock ICS and I feel that Sony has done a really great job here. The other major noticeable in my books is the ability to draw a scribble or directions on a map whens ending a text message (left image).
