HTC confirms the Desire HD not to get Ice Cream Sandwich

htc-desire-hd-ics

After a tumultuous week for HTC, in particular with the Desire HD shenanigans, we have just heard word that the DHD will in fact not be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Yes, you heard it right. We last week reported that it was coming, then not coming, then coming again and left it at that. However, HTC have come out today stating some quite sad news about the ill-fated Desire HD:

After extensive testing, we’ve determined that the current version of HTC Sense with Android provides customers with the best experience on the HTC Desire HD. When we consider new versions of software, we weigh a number of factors, but ultimately the customer experience on the product is the deciding factor. We apologize for any confusion this change may have caused our customers.

This appeared as a footnote at the bottom of HTC’s own Ice Cream Sandwich update list, where the Desire HD is now crossed out – Desire HD*.

Well folks, there you have it. After a couple confirmations and a confusing week as a whole, we now know that HTC have forgotten the Desire HD owners and left them in a pile of Gingerbread.

UPDATE: We’ve just been informed by a reader of ours that there is an online petition to get ICS on the Desire HD going around. It’s already racked up 2,500 signatures and could do with as many as possible. If you’d like to get in on it then visit the petition page – I know I did. Thanks: Level380!

Smells like lazy HTC….. The HTC One V has 512mb of ram (compared to 768mb in the DHD), 1ghz single core cpu as well and is shipping with ICS 4.0 and Sense 4.0 ‘light’ version. There is no reason they couldn’t do this to the DHD as well.

I owned a DHD and it was a heavy but solid girl, battery life a little weak.

The problem is for so so phones I think HTC could get away with not doing it, but the DHD was a flagship phone, and these phones seem to be seen differently to people who want updates for longer periods.

I also owned a DHD about 1.5 years ago. While it was slow and glitchy at times it definitely got the job done while on GB.

I guess HTC don’t have too much motivation to upgrade a 2 y/o phone that is no longer being purchased. If you ask me it’s a poor move on their behalf and will help to sway potential customers away from HTC…
