Jelly Bean starts rolling out to the unlocked Galaxy Nexus today

Nexus-Jelly-Beanas

We thought we still had a few days to wait before Jelly Bean 4.1 would be arriving on the Galaxy Nexus, but it looks like we were wrong. Reports are popping up all over the place that unlocked Galaxy Nexus devices have already started to see the update popup on their phone. Yesterday we heard that Jelly Bean 4.1 had been rolling out to the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus, which Google announced, but now it seems that all owners of the Nexus will receive the latest Android operating system!

The few of us at Android Australia with a Galaxy Nexus have been repeatedly checking for updates but haven’t been fortunate enough to see it available yet.

Let us know if you see the update on your device. Not sure what Jelly Bean has to offer? Then check out our post on Jelly Bean: What to expect.

Commentator Onel suggested trying the following to get the update quicker:

Theres a way to make the update come to you. Go to settings then apps look for Google service framework and clear the data. Turn your phone off and on and search for an update, your phone would say last checked for update 1999 or something . Do it a couple of times and you’ll see the update

Let us know if it works for you, as we haven’t been as fortunate as Onel!

Thanks Tyler!

Hey Onel.. I tried a few times but still no luck. Will keep trying and see if it works.

      • Onel

Hey, yea it should eventually work, i remember reading it of the Vodafone blog for the 4.0.4 update. I tried it a few times didn’t work left it for an hour or so tried it again and worked!

have you guys done a run down on exactly how you unlocked and flashed your gnex’s to be the build that will get this update? if not you should would be good to have a device specific australian based run through of it ;)

Hey Cam. Josh and I who have the unlocked Galaxy Nexus bought ours through Kogan and therefore came unlocked!

      • Cam Charles

thankyou for the run down hahaha

fair enough though i know theres plenty of guides out there but a proving to work aussie one would have been better :P

If news dies down I might try do it :)

Tried Onel’s method a couple times on my unlocked GN but no luck. Any one?

  • Josh

I also tried Onel’s method. It actually said ‘Last check for update 1970.’
    But still no actual update.

Yeah after a few times I got the same Josh, but also no real update :(

I’m still desperately trying with no luck. Hurry up JB!

  • Josh

I woke up at 6 am and was about to hit snooze and then I saw it. Update now or later. NOW!
It took about an hour all in all. When I turned it on I had some problems but those have now been ironed out. It’s great.

Amazing! If only I was the other Josh.

I’ll be smashing my ‘Check Now’ key all day now that it’s down in Aus. Where did you source your Galaxy Nexus?

  • Joshua

Is this only for the unlocked handsets? Are providers able to suppress the update, if attempting to access this way?

    • Cam Charles

only for unlocked and sort of… provider supplied devices have a different version of android then unlocked ones for example the international code for android is generally yakju this is what unlocked phones have and the version for which this update goes out too, provider handset have a variant of that for instance optus’s has yakjudv (i think i cant find it in my settings atm) updates have to match versions

this is primarily the reason why buying a nexus phone from providers basically negates all of the benefits of the nexus device, sure it gets updates first doesnt mean your provider will pass them on first

So many Josh’s up in here ;)

Does anyone have a success story from using Onel’s strategy?

I also have an unlocked Kogan GNex and am patiently waiting for an auto update to Jelly Bean…..

I’m in the same boat Des. Tried Onel’s technique but to no avail. Very anxious to receive the update too!

        lifehacker mentioned this ages ago..

dial *#*#checkin#*#* into your dialer thing, when you hit the last * it supposedly forces the phone to check in and look for updates,

i tried it on my gnex and it does indeed check you in (no updates for me though),

i have a feeling this is no different to what simply going to setting>check for update does but hey give it a go

  • Daniel

Does anyone have the update yet? I just received my Kogan phone on ICS. No luck updating…

I thought Nexus were meant to receive updates as soon as they are available???

    • http://androidaustralia.com.au Josh Berg

I got mine from Kogan and received the update about a month ago now. It all depends where Kogan sourced your Galaxy Nexus from and if it is updated directly by Google or your carrier. There used to be a great app to check but it is no longer on Google Play.

I still have the app on my Galaxy Nexus and perhaps I can provide the apk for you to check.
