We already know Android is now the world’s most popular mobile operating system.

However it has just been announced that Android is now the world’s most popular ads platform too!

Global advertising firm Adfonic today released the official figures for Q2 2012 to show an 8% swing to Android, with an unfortunate 11% loss to Apple.

Adfonic’s report covers some 80 billion ad requests from 200 million mobile devices and includes firms such as Samsung, Warner Bros, eBay, McDonalds, Groupon and Google.

The largest swing by far was in the US where a huge 17% increase was recorded by Android smartphones. We note Android smashes the scoreboard with a massive 63% coverage compared to Apple’s 30%. On average in most other markets we can see an average of around 40% for Android compared to 30% for Apple. Android is even more popular in Africa!

The sheer rise in domination of the Android platform is certainly rewarding to see and is testament to what can be achieved with tenacity, ingenuity and passion.

Is this necessarily a good thing though? Should we be proud Android has more annoying, battery-sapping, intrusive ads than iOS?

I guess it’s a good thing that Android generally gives users the choice of a free app (with ads) or a paid version.

I can’t tell you how happy I was when I first got Angry Birds for free and my iOS friends were paying! That being said, it is only $1.

Most of my apps are the paid versions, but I do love to try out an app with advertisements before I take the plunge and make the purchase.

Yeah, I think I tend to agree, having the option of both is good for users and (i assume) developers.
