Report: Which Australians love Android most? A state-by-state comparison
So, we love Android – a lot. You probably love Android too. And this got us thinking:
Where in Australia do most Android lovers live?
This led us to do some research and find out where most Androidians are located. We used Google Insights for Search, Google Trends and analytics from Android Australia. If you’d like the short answer – it’s Victoria, and that makes me happy. Mainly because I myself live in the garden state, but also because in my own personal endeavours I’ve noticed a much higher prevalence of Android devices in the big (or little) VIC. For those of you who are interested in learning a bit more, read on!
I thought we’d begin with the country as a whole. Interest in Android in Australia was relatively quiet until just over two years ago. It appears as though Australians began thinking (or searching) about Android in April 2010, just before the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade. The graph below displays Australia’s interest in Android on Google Search.
The graph “reflects how many searches have been done for a particular term, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. They don’t represent absolute search volume numbers, because the data is normalized and presented on a scale from 0-100.”
It’s quite interesting to see a rather large spike in October-December 2011 (when ICS was launched) and then another in the last two months. Over the last two months the three biggest pieces of news would probably be the Galaxy S III launch, the Nexus 7 launch and the announcement of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Each of these milestones in the Android world have obviously yielded a huge amount of traffic through Google.
You can see in the slightly more detailed graph below that us Aussies have really been picking up our pace since April 2010, and especially when ICS launched. It may have been the name (or how awesome the OS is) but us Australians are huge fans.
What’s really quite interesting is that via Google Trends it has been shown that the amount of news references to Android from Australians has actually declined in 2012. As you can see below, the second graph (bottom) measures news references mentioning Android that Google has crawled. Let’s hope Jelly Bean helps to boost Australia’s interest in the (flailing?) OS that we love.
State by State:
The above graph was accompanied by a relative statistic of a state-by-state comparison. As you may have read up top, Victoria is the stand-out of the bunch. VIC has a relative score of 100, with NSW (82), QLD (78), WA (73) and TAS (63) making up the rest of top the top 5. SA, ACT and the NT accounted for the remaining three spots of or 8 states on offer.
After having a look at Google Search analytics, we thought it appropriate to check out our own statistics. Much to our surprise (or actually, not surprising at all), the state with the most visits to Android Australia is …. Victoria! Victorians are clearly the most enthused and involved with Android, leading me to think whether the tech industry should perhaps make the move from Sydney to Melbourne – it’d make my job a whole lot easier!
So there you have it folks. This is the full run-down of Android interest in Australia through Google Insights, Trends and our very own blog. Victoria is the leader of the pack, with NSW as a somewhat close runner up. What will 2012 bring us? Who knows!
Which state do you represent with your Android love?
